Ethics, also known as moral philosophy, is a branch of philosophy that addresses questions about morality. I have chosen to report on the ethical issue of Abortion. My report will include background information on my chosen topic and why it is an ethical issue, the catholic view on the ethical issue and additional information.
What is abortion? Abortion is often described as the termination of pregnancy by removal or expulsion of a foetus or embryo from the uterus, before foetal viability. The term also may be generally defined to include any termination of pregnancy other than birth. Abortion can sometimes occur out of spontaneous complications of the pregnancy, it can also be induced, in humans and in other species. There are two types of abortion; induced and spontaneous. The term abortion is sometimes referred to as induced abortion of a human rather than non-human pregnancy; and spontaneous abortions are usually termed miscarriages. Abortion is considered to be a legal safe medical procedure in the developed world. Unsafe abortions are those which are performed by those outside the medical field and without or lacking in proper training. These unsafe practises result in approximately 70 thousand maternal deaths and 5 million disabilities per year globally. 42 million abortions are said to be performed each year and 20 million of those abortions are performed unsafely. 40% of world’s women are able to access therapeutic and elective within gestational limits. There have been many methods used when induced abortion has been facilitated. These methods include herbal abortifacients, the use of sharpened tools, physical trauma, and other traditional methods. Modern medicine utilizes medications and surgical procedures to induce abortion. There are many issues that revolve around the legality, prevalence, cultural status, and religious status of the world.
