Millions of Americans suffer from anorexia. Anorexia is a disease involving intentional starvation, an obsession with food and weight related issues, and extreme weight loss. Although this eating disorder is prevalent in teenage females, anyone can suffer from it. If left untreated for too long, this disease is deadly. Anorexia is a self starvation of the body caused by a wide range of psychological, interpersonal and social factors which can be cured by early and effective treatment methods.

Anorexia is a potentially fatal eating disorder. During this disease, the anorexic will deprive themselves of vital nutrients through severely restricting food intake. Despite this excessive weight loss, the person will continue to feel overweight. They deny the fact that they are at a dangerously low body weight and fear being “fat”. An anorexic also has abnormal food rituals and may become obsessed with food issues. This behavior has serious repercussions on the victim’s health. A drastic reduction in heart rate and blood pressure could result in heart failure. Reduced bone density, loss in muscle mass and hair loss may occur. Multiple system failures are also possible. All these consequences can result in death which occurs in 5-20% of anorexics. In females, the menstrual cycle can become lost or disturbed. These distinct symptoms are warning signs of anorexia nervosa.

Causes of anorexia stem from a wide range of sources. People with certain psychological traits are at a higher risk. This includes obsessive-compulsive, high anxiety or sensitive avoidant people. Often times, an anorexic lacks a sense of identity and they will try to conform to a socially approved form- thin. They seek approval by placing unrealistic expectations on themselves. They fear any weight gain despite there dangerously low body weight. Family problems may also play a role.
