The treatment and control of asthma patients is an important aspect of medical care (Wolfenden, 2003). This study will evaluate the care of an asthma patient at a primary care facility where the author practices.  It seeks to critically analyse and demonstrate the author’s knowledge, understanding and application of treatment to a patient with asthma, in accordance with accepted asthma treatment guidelines.   The study is based on an asthmatic obese thirty five year old female.   She is 28 weeks pregnant and is non compliant with her medication.  Focus will be placed on non concordance of medication during pregnancy, obesity during pregnancy and patient education.   These areas pose the main challenges to the patient’s treatment and care.     For confidentiality purposes according to the Nursing and Midwifery Council codes of professional conduct (NMC, 2008) pseudonym will be used and the patient would be known as Mrs Jumbo.
Mrs Jumbo is a thirty five year old female. She suffered with asthma since the age of three.   There was no diagnostic test as diagnosis of asthma in children is difficult because of the complex nature of the disorder in the young and other conditions with similar symptoms.   She was in remission during her teen-age years but her asthma returned after she became pregnant.   She was on step two of the asthma guidelines having with beclometasone 200mg twice a day and salbutamol 200 mcg (prn).   She stopped using her inhaled steroid for fear of harming her baby when she became pregnant.   Mrs Jumbo is very obese with a BMI of 35 and lives with her husband and daughter.   She gets shortness of breath when going up stairs or going to the shops.   She was having flu-like symptoms with shortness of breath in the past week and began using inhaled salbutamol three to four times a day with partial relief
