Discuss how Atwood use language to present the idea of repression against women.

Margret Atwood being a writer many of her novels are based on women however Atwood does not consider herself a feminist writer; however she is considered a feminist by others.   Her novel the handmaid’s tale exposes the repression of women when living in a patriarchy society, in which she uses a variety of techniques to explore how women are repressed. This could be due to the repression of faith and knowledge but also the way in which other women repress others.  
Within the novel women are repressed to how much they know about faith. Although Gilead claims to be a society in which faith is something never forgotten many of the women in the society are restricted into how much they know about faith. This become aware to us in the quote “we have cushions, small red velvet ones with nothing written on them, not even faith”. This could imply that having a word something to do with religion could drive these women into answering questions about the laws made. The word “faith” suggests having some belief in believing that something better may occur, in which they do not have to follow this oppressive regime, it could also suggest that they society does not intended to educate the women about the religion. Atwood intention was to highlight faith and religion and how hidden they are. In contrast there has been a remaking of religion in Gilead this is due many don’t know where bible really is, it could be argued that the religion and faith they follow are man-made laws. According to the bible it is known that men and women are equal Luke 20:34-36 says, for they are EQUAL UNTO THE ANGELS. However in chapter 42 “salvaging are always segregated” if Gilead followed the true ways of the bible and took the bible into account they would abide by the laws set the word “segregated” suggest the society which unequal and unfair, this could refer back to the 1970s in which many feminists protested...
