My definition of a Health Care manager would describe an individual who oversees the daily functions of his or her facility; whether his or her facility consists of an independently owned nursing home, a clinic, or a department in a major health care facility. A few roles that a health care manager is responsible for is to ensure his or her employees receive proper training to perform his or her duties, maintain, and correct timecards as well as creating work schedules. A health care manager is also responsible for maintaining the ebb and flow of his or her facility. If there were a void in his or her facility because an employee cannot perform his or her duties a health care manager will ensure that void is filled; in addition a health care manager would also be responsible for resolving problems. When conflicts arise in his or her facility a health care manager may act as a mediator. However, the most significant role a health care manager has is acting as a liaison, working directly with physicians, patients, staff, and other departments to resolve issues or concerns. For example, if there is an irate patient who wishes to file a complaint about a department a health care manager will attempt to diffuse the situation so no escalation is necessary.
I hope to learn the basic foundation elements are in order for a Health Care manager to be successful. A health care manager should be fair, passionate, empathetic, trustworthy, and determined. I believe I possess these qualities. I do lack in areas that require procedure and process; like a department’s role in Joint Commission visits, or ensuring that a department is within budget for the month. I would also like to know how I differentiate myself from a receptionist and to be viewed as someone in a managerial role. I hope to have a better understanding of what the role and responsibility is of a health care manager.
