NOTE: The writing requirement is a state mandate for all transfer-level history courses. I. The Paper
A. Topic Selection
For your research paper, you are to select a significant and controversial event in American History that occurred between 1877 and the present.
You should select a significant event with many reliable sources. (A discussion of reliability is addressed below.) What makes something significant? That question is certainly debatable, but generally in selecting the topic, you should be able to answer at least one of the following questions: Did it change the course of history? Did it leave a legacy that the present generation must contend with? Did it influence the action(s) of an individual or group? Did it affect America’s relationships with other nations? Etc.
Your selection should also include something that generated conflicting, historical interpretations which adds to the interest of the topic and its controversial nature. For example, the sinking of the U.S. Battleship Maine generated numerous theories regarding the cause, and it became significant in that it was a contributing factor in the Spanish-American War. Other examples would include the following:
-Internment of Japanese-Americans in WWII
-The Bonus Army
-Causes of the Great Depression
-Using atomic bombs to end...
