The Olympic Games are the most significant sporting event to be held in a city. They are known to be a young athletes dream and greatest accomplishment. Not only do they have a positive impact on the athletes, but they also represent “an extraordinary sporting, social, cultural and environmental legacy for the host city, region and country.” (Preuss, 2004)   Preuss highlights the beneficial impact of the Olympic Games, financially and socially. Nowadays, hosting the Olympic Games can result in redevelopment, allowing developmental changes to occur over “…a seven-year-cycle…” which might have taken several decades. (Preuss, 2004)

In my personal view, I agree to an extent that the stagings of the Olympic Games have lived up to the stated values of the Olympic Charter. I am going to give the reasons why, and provide evidence through research. I am going to look at a countering argument and provide examples of how the stagings of Olympics haven’t always gone to plan. I am going to focus on the main aims and values of the Olympic Charter and identify key evidence of how the stagings of the Olympics have succeed or failed to fulfil these aims. The Olympic Charter is a set of rules that the host city and athletes abide by. “It governs the organisation, action and operation of the Olympic Movement and sets forth the conditions for the celebration of the Olympic Games." (Olympic.org, 2011) If the Olympic Charter did not exsist the Olympics would not have been as successful as it has proven in the past number of years.

“Olympism is a philosophy of life, exalting and combining in a balanced whole the qualities of body, will and mind.” (Olympic Charter, 2007) The Olympic Charter has three core values that are promoted. They are Excellence, Friendship and Respect. In the Olympic ideal, excellence refers to “…giving one’s best, on the field of play or in life, without over-emphasising comparative performance yet still being determined to reach one’s personal objectives.”...
