INTRODUCTION
      1.1 BACKGROUND   OF   THE STUDY
According to Baileres midwifery dictionary (2003). Pregnancy is defined as the condition of having a developing embryo or fetus within the female body. The state from conception to the delivery of fetus within normal duration of 280days (40weeks or 9months and 7days) counted from first day of last normal menstrual period.
Pregnancy is a thing of joy which every woman wish to experience in her life time because any woman   who had never conceive once in her lifetime is not known to be a complete woman in cultural aspect of view. Pregnancy becomes a problem when there is a symptomatic rise in blood pressure (PIH) which is a life threatening condition and may eventually lead to maternal or fetal mortality.
Dutta (2004), define pregnancy induced hypertension as the hypertension that develops as a direct result of gravid states which includes gestational hypertension, pre-eclampsia and eclampsia.
Ojo and Briggs (2006), also sees pregnancy induced hypertension as a condition occurring after 28weeks of gestation which is characterized by hypertension, oedema and albuminuria. Although this condition is common in primi gravida, patient with over distension of the abdomen, severe pregnancy induced hypertension, diabetes, chronic nephritis and hydatiform mole.
The cause of pregnancy induced hypertension are unknown but an enzyme called Corin is an underlying cause of pregnancy induced hypertension which is normally present in the heart and it deficiency in the uterus may cause asymptomatic rise in the blood pressure(Mayo, 2012).
Risk factors responsible for this condition are family history, placenta abnormalities, genetic disorder, Immunologic phenomenon, new paternity and primi gravida.
