Oversexualization of young girls in the U.S.
"A child's mind is like a sponge soaking up anything and everything it encounters" Kathy and Mitch Finley "Nuturing your imagination." When children play they put themselves into the situation to them the situation becomes reality due to the fact they haven't developed the filters nessacary to make that distinction this is where the concern comes in when children cannot discern play from reality. So young girls begin to see their toys as right for this reason dolls who wear fish net stockings and other pieces of clothing reminiscent of women's lingerie are a major detriment to the healthy self image of these young girls if it's right for their dolls to dress this way then it surely must be right for them to dress this way as well.
Toys aren't the only problem music teaches girls how they should dress and how they should act although there are some shows that can give girls positive influence they are few and far between. Whereas the negative images of women are running rampid in today's media with music videos showing girls in bikinis flirting with guys and lyrics emphasizing sex. This oversexualization of women is causing women and young girls not to value their bodies and base their self worth on their looks and sexual appeal.
"A recent study found that girls as young as six years old wanted to be like dolls who were dressed in a sexy way compared to dolls who were dressed stylishly, but covered up. These young girls associated being sexy with being the way they wanted to look, being popular in school, and who they wanted to play with. One study found that about one-third of the clothes for girls sold had "sexualizing characteristics." Interestingly, most of these clothes also had age-appropriate elements, perhaps obscuring the sexual side of the designs." Dr. Jim Taylor in a article on the huffington post.
The clothing companies understand that girls are desiring this sexy style of dress over the covered up...
