Psychoanalyzing a Struggling Woman
When given a specific circumstance, the human mind can be a dangerous thing. The mind can be defined as “The totality of conscious and unconscious mental processes and activities”(Dictionary.com).   Known as the founding father of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud, a late Austrian Neurologist, studied the human mind and came up with several theories involving the conscious and unconscious.   Freud described in his finding of psychoanalysis that besides the action of heredity, a person’s development is determined by the events in early childhood (psychoanalytic ideas). In Francine River’s novel Redeeming Love Angel, a prostitute, is a prime example of Freud’s studies; Angel was raised by a mother who was a prostitute and allowed men to treat her awfully, and in turn, Angel grew up to follow in her mother’s footsteps (Rivers). The conscious decisions of people, whether good or bad, can be reverted back to Sigmund Freud’s theory of psychoanalysis.
Growing up with a prostitute as a mother was difficult for Sarah, an innocent little girl. “ “Is he coming back?’ Sarah was afraid. She never wanted to see him again. He had hurt mama and made her cry” (Rivers 17). Sarah was a sweet little girl being raised by a mother who did not seem to have her life on track. She saw her mother at her lowest when men would come in and out of her life.” She stayed in bed too late, and when she got up, she didn’t want to go for long walks the way she used to”(Rivers 17).   At a young age, Sarah had to watch her mother bring man after man into their house and watch her mother sell her body. Sarah’s mother seemed to put every man in front of Sarah and was not sufficiently taking care of her daughter’s needs. Sarah’s mother would even get jealous of Sarah if the men she brought home showed more attention to Sarah than they did her.
