The Industrial Revolution was an amazing time in American history, change was flourishing; factories were becoming the norm in large cities, therefore people were heading to   metropolitan areas to find work.   Immigrants had found their way to America in hopes of finding better employment opportunities.   Unfortunately at this point in time, there were men of business that took advantage of those willing to work.   They had yoked their workers in horrid working conditions, utterly long hours, and very little pay.   Not all of the CEO's of that time period were out to make a buck off of the back of their employee's.   There were a few business men that respected their workers and even went out of their way to help them. These men knew that without their employee's, they would not have achieved as much as they had.  
In 1906, Upton Sinclair wrote The Jungle, which was a scathing exposé of the Chicago meatpacking industry.1   In the excerpt of his book, Sinclair, through the life of his main character an immigrant named Jurgis, revealed the horrid conditions that were prevalent in the meatpacking factory.   Sinclair went on to paint a vivid picture of the conditions that the employee's had to endure.   For example in the pickling room, there were men that had the knuckles in their fingers slowly eaten away by acid, “one by one,”2   from the chemicals used to pickle the meat.   The author also spoke of the men who carved the meat, who had cut themselves so often that where their thumbs were had become   “a mere lump of flesh”.3   The employee's worked in dark, dank rooms, that had artificial lighting, and little ventilation while sickening odors embraced them.4   It is unfathomable that those men were working in conditions that bad.   How could someone have allowed work conditions such as that to take place.
