Social pedagogy is a system of theory, practice and training that teaches the use of hands, head and heart when dealing with children and young people. Social pedagogues are trained to engage with children using emotional awareness and genuine empathy. It is a holistic approach to caring for children which combines education with care and recognises that we all have a shared responsibility when it comes to caring for children, young people and adults. It is a system and practice that involves multi agency collaboration that has been used in nurseries, schools, residential children’s services in the Nordic countries of Norway, Germany, Denmark, Iceland, Sweden, Finland and other European countries for many years, but is a relatively new concept for the UK.   Social pedagogy is based on humanistic values stressing, human dignity, mutual respect, trust and equality an unconditional appreciation for all children, young people and adults. Moss and Petrie (2002 cited in Foley, 2011, page 131).
The benefits of the UK adopting the theory and practice of social pedagogy within, nurseries, the education system and children’s services would mean that children, young people and their families become active participants in their own development. As the principals of social pedagogy deals with the connectedness of human beings; it focuses on the child or young person as an individual who is unique, with different wants and needs from everyone else and supports the child’s over all development. For practitioners of social pedagogue working with children and young people they have a relationship that is based on mutual respect and equality.
