Chapter One: Bruno Makes a Discovery
1. Maria the family’s Maid ‘always kept her head bowed and never looked up from the carpet’ because it was her job to work as a Maid for Bruno’s family and to always do what they asked her to do, even though she sometimes didn’t like doing it, or agreed with what was being asked. I think Maria kept her head bowed to the floor because she had no other choice but to do what Bruno’s Father told her to do and she didn’t like it and was not proud of it, so it was easier for her to just look down and continue on.
2. Bruno thought his Mother had not applied her make-up correctly that morning ‘because the rims of her eyes where more red than usual, like his own after he had been causing chaos and got into trouble and ended up crying’ (page 3). She had been crying because the family had to pack up their belongings and move from Berlin and she wasn’t very happy about it.
3. We learn about ‘The Fury’ in this chapter that he had been to dinner at Bruno’s the week before (page 3) and that he had big things in mind for Bruno’s Father (page 4). ‘The Fury” had been to dinner to discuss arrangements about Bruno’s Father’s new job, and how they had to move from Berlin.
4. When Bruno said his Mother’s laugh ‘was a strange kind of laugh because she did not look happy and she turned away from him as if she did not want him to see her face’ it meant that although she laughed, she was not happy and did not think that it was funny, and in fact she was pretty sad and upset about having to move from Berlin, and she turned her face because she didn’t want Bruno to see that she was sad and upset because it would have made him more upset about having o move away. This quote suggests that Bruno’s Mother is a caring Mother because she didn’t want to upset Bruno. It also suggests that she was just as unhappy about moving as Bruno, although she tried to hide...
