The Story Of An Hour

”The Story Of An Hour” is a short story written by Kate Chopin and was published in 1894. It tells a story about a woman named Mrs. Louise Mallard who lacks freedom and prioritizes freedom more than her own husband. The surrounding environment is during the story an inspiration in her transformation. The short story gives us a clear insight of what married women in the late 1800s went through, and that they had a limited freedom. The story is characterized by many different themes, but the main theme is the craving for freedom. When she finds out about her deceased husband, she is at first scared and sad, but after that, it dawns on her that she is free to do whatever she wants and just live for herself. She is held by an outrageous joy, which unfortunately is taken away from her the moment that her husband enters through the door. The author might want to portray a woman and her cheerless life with a dominant husband who might be repressing her or deciding over her.

The main character is called Louise Mallard and she is the character we know most about. Louise is afflicted with a heart disease, which means that if she gets frightened, surprised, or just too overwhelmed she could die. She has a husband who’s name is Brently Mallard. In the short story we are told that Louise is a young woman with lines in her face that could bear witness of the repression of all that she contains as a woman. She is not a weak person. In the matter of fact she actually contains strength. This doubleness shows that this seemingly weak and ill woman is strong inside and that she has had to repress this strength because of the norms in society, which is making her ill and wrinkled. “She was young with a fair calm face whose lines bespoke repression and even a certain strength” (p. 1 l. 28-29).   We are also told that she did not love her husband fully, and that she prioritized freedom more than her own husband, “And yet she had loved him—sometimes.
