Outcome 1: understand the importance of good personal hygiene
1. Explain why personal hygiene is important.
Personal Hygiene is important for feeling good about your self, comfortable and clean. Good personal hygiene means the reduction of body odour which can be unpleasant for the individual and others. Personal hygiene also makes you have feelings of self-worth and can make you feel valued. It can also prevent skin complaints, unpleasant smells and bacterial or parasite infections.
2. Describe the effects of poor personal hygiene on health and well being.
Not maintaining your personal hygiene can lead to unpleasant body odours and being isolated by friends and family, it could make the individuals skin break down, this can also cause sores and lead to infections and pain for the individual. It can also effect their mental health and lead to them having a loss in confidence. Their emotional well being can be affected, with the individual not feeling good in themselves. This can lead to low self-esteem and lack of confidence. Not maintaining hygiene in the mouth can cause tooth decay and gum problems. Hands harbour lots of germs especially under the nails if not cleaned regularly; these germs could be transmitted and spread infections.
Outcome 2: Know how to encourage an individual to maintain personal hygiene.
1. Explain how to address personal hygiene issues with an individual in a sensitive manner without imposing own values.
It is important to be sensitive and not impose your own values on the individual; there could be cultural issues or issues around privacy that have to be considered. Explain to the individual that you will always respect their right to privacy, and that you are there to help them.
