Analysis
Separation of Powers ensures that no one branch of government exceeds in authority over any one of the other two branches. An unequal level of power amongst the three branches of government can upset the delicate balance of the democracy. The three branches are the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial branches. No one branch has all the power and each of them is monitored by another. The monitoring system is referred to as the system of Checks and Balances. Each branch is responsible for “checking” a responsibility of one of the other branches and in doing so, “balances” the system so that no one branch has supreme power. The three branches were designed in such a manner so that the Checks and Balances could be established. Each of the following branches has the power to do the following (which can only be accomplished with one of the other branches): The Legislative branch makes a law, the Executive branch executes the law and, the Judicial branch interprets the law.
