Therefore if any person is [engrafted] in Christ (the Messiah) he is a new creation (a new creature altogether); the old [previous moral and spiritual condition] has passed away. Behold the fresh and new has come! 2Corinthians5:17(AMP). The bible speaks of us who have received Christ as those whose past spiritual condition has passed away and now a fresh one has come. What was this old spiritual condition we were in?

First of all it has to be understood that we are spirits and we live in a mortal body, if we are to go back to the moment God created man, as it is written in Genesis 1:26-27 . Brethren, if we were created in God’s image and His own likeness we are spirits because God is spirit (John 4:25). The body was formed later on as written in Genesis2:7 , and then God breathed the spirit into the body. Therefore it is essential that we know that the visible body is just a frame, we posses the frame and our soul (mind and intellect) altogether. The design is that we as the possessors ought to control or direct these two (body and soul).

When man disobeyed in the beginning we suffered eternal separation from God. This separation means that we died in our spirits; we were no longer connected to our source of life who is God himself.   The spirit was no longer in control but man started to live by feelings whereby everything became sensual.

Therefore the old spiritual condition which every believer was in before getting born again was death in spirit, even though still breathing the spirit man was not alive to its true nature of divinity, connected to God.  

Because we were corrupt at the core of our being no wonder everything that came out from within us was dented with corruption. There was no way we could live righteously. Our religious actions could not attain us righteousness because God does not look at our physical performance but the condition of our spirit (Proverb 16:2 all the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD...
